more on surprises
coming out of easter, i thought a little more on surprises and on resurrection. although there was newness and surprise in Jesus' birth, teachings, miracles, etc., i don't know if there was anything that shook the Jesus community (as well as those around) more than the resurrection. even though he told them about it three times or more beforehand, there was no advent to this event.
i'm not sure i quite know what it means to be open to God's surprise of new life. if i ask for God's new life, and if i pray for resurrection, am i misunderstanding what God wants to do? God might choose to work and really already is working in ways outside of my/our expectations. we need to learn to dream, to listen, to think beyond and to recognize that which is.
here's a short excerpt from julia esquivel's "threatened with resurrection" (1980) which comes out of Guatemala during violent civil war , which makes trivial the issues that we face...
¡acompáñanos en esta vigilia
y sabrás lo que es soñar!
¡sabrás entonces lo maravilloso que es
vivir amenazado de Resurrección!
come with us on this vigil
and you'll know what it means to dream!
you'll know how marvelous it is
to live threatened with Resurrection!
